Between Extremes: The Changing Landscapes of Gil Jamieson

Cattle in Coominglah, 1974. Gil Jamieson. Oil on canvas. An expressive painting of a rider on horse back entering the scrub to round up cattle.

SAT 12 APR – FRI 6 JUN 2025

Between Extremes features paintings by artist Gil Jamieson (1934 - 1992) from the Monto Museum of Art collection. Selected from Jamieson’s substantial legacy of paintings housed in Monto, this exhibition displays a fraction of his lifelong visual investigation into the changing landscape of Central Queensland.

Between Extremes pulls on common threads from the Monto Museum of Art collection. This selection emphasises the cycles of change within the land, epitomised by the story of drought, scarcity and death in contrast to times of rejuvenation and abundance. Jamieson’s works document a human experience that is inseparable from the land. Times of despair and celebration are innately linked with the state of the landscape in each work.
