CQ Nature Photography Competition
Calling all CQ photographers, nature lovers, or anyone with a smart phone! Over $10,000 in prizes is up for grabs in Fitzroy Basin Association’s (FBA) CQ Nature Photography Competition. To celebrate the environment that sustains one of the most productive regions in Australia, FBA is looking for the best images of the region’s natural assets.
CQ has over 3 million head of cattle (making it the Beef Capital of Australia), nationally and internationally significant wetlands, marine turtle rookeries, key koala habitat and the largest river system on the east coast of Australia. It encompasses the traditional lands of at least 16 First Nations, and today is also home to passionate individuals, diverse communities, and essential industries.
Natural assets are a part of our natural environment that provide important environmental services to individuals, businesses and communities. From productive pastures to world-class wetlands, hundreds of special species and many passionate people, CQ is worthy of the focus this competition brings to the region. From Monday 28 February, photographers are invited to capture one or more of the region’s major natural assets and/or the people or communities caring for them and share why they think it’s special.
Seven major Fitzroy Region Experience prizes (valued collectively at over $10,000) along with 10 Peoples’ Choice awards are up for grabs. All seven major prizes include two nights’ accommodation and an experience voucher.
The competition is open to both amateur and professional photographers of any age, who live, work, play or study in the Fitzroy region.
Everyone has a role to play in creating a more sustainable future and FBA’s Regional Engagement Coordinator, Jo Kurpershoek, outlines that participating in this competition is a fun and meaningful way to get involved.
“Whether you enter a photo or just vote for your favourite, anyone can get involved in celebrating and promoting what is special about our CQ landscapes, waterways, plants, animals and people,” said Jo.
The competition has been created to commemorate the fourth decade and revision of the Central Queensland Sustainability Strategy 2030 (CQSS2030). The strategy has been created with and for the central Queensland community and provides a roadmap to guide our region towards a sustainable future.
The latest updates include a website refresh to present the updated strategy, which now features a story sharing platform for the CQ community, and activities to help anyone take sustainable action. Drawing on the best available scientific knowledge, as well as global, Australian and Queensland targets, the CQSS2030 marries them with what our regional communities want for their future. The photos collected through the CQ Nature Photography Competition will add to the online platform, highlighting CQ communities’ commitment and appreciation of their local environment.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for us to celebrate the complexity and beauty of central Queensland’s natural assets and people, and share it with others,” Jo added.
