Banana Shire Community Honours Outstanding Citizens with Australia Day Awards

The recipients of the 2023 Banana Shire Australia Day Awards were announced this morning at the official ceremony held at the Jambin Recreation Grounds.

Jorgen (John) Rasmussen was named Citizen of the Year for dedicating his life to serving his community and improving the lives of countless individuals and groups in the Banana Shire.

John Rasmussen is an exceptional individual who has dedicated his life to serving his community in the Banana Shire. A Danish immigrant who arrived in Australia in 1966, John has worked hard to achieve his dreams and give back to those around him. He has been an integral part of the Banana Shire, participating in numerous organisations and helping to improve the lives of countless individuals and groups, including the Kilburnie Homestead, Banana Shire Historical Society, Callide Dawson Flying Club (and other nearby flying clubs), Jambin State School, as well as numerous farming businesses. In 2022, John was presented with a Life Membership award from the Callide Dawson Flying Group in recognition of his services. John is a true silent achiever who embodies the values of determination, generosity, and selflessness.

The recipients of the 2023 Banana Shire Australia Day Awards are:

Citizen of the Year: Jorgen (John) Rasmussen

Young Citizen of the Year: Hayley Thornton

Community Event of the Year: Biloela Kindy That Dam Run

Community Group or Team: Moura Multi-Purpose Health Services Auxiliary Inc

Junior Sportsperson: Jaxon Green

Volunteer Award: Gordon Twiner

Banana Shire Council Mayor Nev Ferrier presented six Australia Day awards at the official ceremony where he recognised the achievements and contributions these outstanding people and community groups do for the Shire.

“These individuals that we are celebrating today go above and beyond for the benefit of our community, and their stories are truly inspiring. Whether you are the award recipient or not, I want to say well done and thank you to every single nominee,” Mayor Nev Ferrier said.
