Fats and Oils Poured Down Kitchen Sink Causes Sewer Blockages, Costing Councils Thousands
Banana Shire Council is urging residents to dispose of fats and oils correctly after maintenance crews reported an increase in sewer blockages caused by fat build-up. Incorrect disposal of fats and oils, including pouring them down the kitchen sink or drain, can cause them to solidify and stick to the walls of the sewer pipes, eventually leading to blockages.
According to the latest data, the number one cause of sewer blockages within the Council sewer network is caused by the incorrect disposal of fats and oils. A recent fat/grease blockage of a sewerage main at Moura resulted in a sewage overflow and expensive clean-up bill.
To prevent blockages and overflows, councils are reminding residents to dispose of fats and oils correctly. The recommended method is to pour leftover fats and oils into a container and dispose of them in the garbage bin. Residents are also advised to avoid putting other items like tea leaves, coffee grounds, and food scraps down the sink, as they can also contribute to blockages.
Councils are encouraging residents to spread the word and take action to keep the community and environment safe and healthy.
"By following these simple steps, we can all do our part in protecting the sewer network and ensuring a safe and healthy environment for everyone," said Mayor Nev Ferrier. "Let's work together to prevent sewer blockages and overflows and avoid costly clean-up bills."
