Japanese Encephalitis Virus (JEV) Detected in Banana Shire

Published: 18th April 2025

Banana Shire Council has been notified of a confirmed case of Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) in a pig within our region. This follows previous alerts and serves as a reminder of the ongoing presence of mosquito-borne diseases in Queensland.

What You Need to Know:

Transmission: JEV is spread through mosquito bites. It does not transmit from person to person or through consuming pork products.

Risk: While most human infections are mild, JEV can cause serious illness in rare cases.

Prevention: Protect yourself by using insect repellent, wearing long-sleeved clothing, and eliminating standing water around your property to reduce mosquito breeding sites.

We urge residents, especially those near wetlands, to remain vigilant. If you experience symptoms like fever, headache, or confusion, seek medical attention promptly.
