Banana Shire Gets Ready for $40 Billion Renewable Energy Pipeline
Banana Shire Council is preparing for a major uplift in renewable energy development, with 25 large-scale projects in the pipeline across the region. The projects, which span wind, solar and battery storage, are collectively valued at over $40 billion and signal a significant transformation for the Central Queensland economy.
At least eight of these projects are expected to commence construction before July 2026.
These projects will:
- Bring over $10.8 billion in direct investment
- Create more than 2,500 construction jobs
- Attract $75.6 million in Housing Policy investment
- Support Queensland’s broader energy transition goals
The busiest period of activity — with 15 or more projects running concurrently — is expected between Q3 2026 and Q4 2028, with sustained construction activity forecast from Q3 2025 through to Q4 2030.
To support and manage this growth, Banana Shire Council has introduced a range of proactive initiatives, including:
- A housing levy on major projects to support residential development
- A proposed 700-person temporary workers camp in Biloela (now open for Expressions of Interest)
- A strong focus on local procurement, skills training, and infrastructure readiness
“We’re making sure we’re ready — not just to support these projects, but to ensure they support us,” said Mayor Nev Ferrier.
“This is about more than just clean energy. It’s about long-term benefits for our local economy, our workforce, and our towns.”
Banana Shire is already home to operational renewable assets, including the Moura Solar Farm. With 17 different proponents involved in current proposals, the region has emerged as a key hub in Queensland’s renewable energy transition.
The Council’s broader strategy also includes:
- Waste and resource recovery planning
- Council is working to ensure landholders are informed, protected and engaged early in the development process. This includes supporting fair negotiations, encouraging transparent communication from proponents, and advocating for best-practice standards across all projects.
- Working with Coexistence Queensland to develop a mechanism for assessment and distribution of community benefits associated with the respective projects.
“We’re the Shire of opportunity,” said Mayor Ferrier.
“And we’re committed to making sure these opportunities are real, local, and lasting.”
